Part of article from History of Gregories by John Broadbent
Article details the purchase of Gregories by Edmund Burke in 1768. It was bought for £20,000 the money borrowed by Burke. The borrowing led to financial problems for the lenders but repayment was very delayed and led to issues. Final payments were complete by 1770.There was also controversy with Waller of Hall Barn about scraping mud from Candelmas Pond considered by Burke to be part of his land that he rented but which Waller considered his. Later Waller objected to Burke saying ‘of Gregories’ Waller claimed he was Lord of Hall Barn, Wilton and Gregories. This is why Burke changed the name of Gregories to Butlers Court. Mention is made of a mill on Mill Lane between 2 ponds used by locals for free when harvests failed. Burkes wanted to improve the house and grounds but still owed money for rent of land.
