The MP whose name lives on
Article and photograph about Edmund Burke his life, buildings and death. Born Ireland moved to London aged 25years. He published 2 books one called Essay on the Sublime and Beautiful. In 1765 he became an MP for Wendover and in 1768 bought Gregories 600 acres for £23000. He was highly strung and sensitive. He had many influential friends. He was a good farmer doubling the value of his estate. He also was a scientist when breeding his livestock. He was devastated by the death of his only son. He refused a peerage at this time to become Lord Burke of Beaconsfield. He died in 1797 leaving a widow in Gregories. Burke was believed to be slightky deranges in his final years. Fearful of being dug up his burial place was kept secret until discovered in 1920 by a local historian. A small brass plaque marks the place on the 7th pew on the right back facing the nave. He has 4 memorial stones in the church. He had an ice house part of Gregories covered today for safety. Burkes cedar still exists in the grounds of Butlers Court home of Wiggins Teape. One of the church bells is dedicated to him in St Marys Church.
