The Beaconsfield Historical Society

The Beaconsfield Historical Society (BHS) was founded in 1961.  As well as holding talks and organising visits to historical sites, it collects, preserves and publishes material relating to the history of Beaconsfield and its locality.  An extensive archive has been built up over the years and is used for research, events and exhibitions.

The current membership of the Society is around 200 and we warmly welcome new members.  Each year the Society presents a series of eight talks during the winter months on a wide range of differing themes.  These are free for members, with a small charge to visitors who are able to pay on the door at the Fitzwilliams Centre.  During the summer, coach trips are arranged to places of historical interest and the costs of these visits is charged to participants.

BHS has actively supported restoration projects including the refurbishment of Edmund Waller’s tomb in 2005-6 and the restoration of the roof of St Mary’s church in 2007 as well as staging numerous public exhibitions.

The society has also published several books on local subjects including The History of Beaconsfield, Beaconsfield in Old Photographs and The Coming of the Railway to Beaconsfield.  Please go to ‘Publications’ to see the full listing and how you can buy a copy.
