Large landscape book - The Turnpike Age
History of roads, their repairs by locals who were obliged by Parliament to turn out 4 days a year to help maintain roads and later the passing of an act in 1621 insisting on tolls to repair roads from the north to London which preceded the eventual introduction of the Turnpike Act of 1663 which enabled the erection of a toll gate and levying of tolls for the Great North Road repairs. Over the next 150 years all major roads in Britain were managed by over 1100 Toll Trust. Local roads were still managed by the parishes. The book contains many sketches, further information about tollgates their charges and advertisements, roads, canals and trucks, waggons and stagecoaches and the development of the nations transport network. Mention is made of the main road construction men from the mid 1700’s – Metcalf, Macadam and Telford.
