Gala Performance of Terence Rattigans Separate Tables performed by the New Theatre Group
Official programme of the production by the New Theatre Group of Separate Tables to celebrate the opening of The Chiltern Theatre. November 14th 1963.
Attended by Lord and Lady Burnham, newsreader- Andrew Gardner, theatre critic – Alan Dent, and veteran film actor Finlay Currie. The excellent cast included Barbara Richards, Derek Barnes, Muriel Nelson, John Taylor, Geta Barnes, Aviva Wiseman are just a few.
The programme details the founding of the New Theatre Group by Bernard Cane in 1951. At this time they had performed 39 productions over 12 years. The Group won the Trophy at the Slough Arts Festival with Dangerous Corner in 1959. The Group has its own workshop where scenery and lighting are created.
The Chiltern Theatre being opened with this production was once the Picture House , now redecorated and kitted out with a stage, purchased for £26,500 by the Beaconsfield Town Council to enable live entertainment of all kinds to be provided in Beaconsfield. Councillors attended the event. The Chair, Cllr H A Gray, announced to the audience that this was the first civic theatre in Bucks.
