Articles include notes about the arrival in 1941 of the Free French to Butlers Court when the buildings became a naval convalescent hospital. Emergencies went to Amersham Hospital. Many suffered from war injuries and some from Tuberculosis. Grove Ash and Highfield both in Grove Road and Westmoreland House (for French officers in Burkes Road) provided extra accommodation. Over 4 years there were over 1000 Free French looked after, about 400 at any one time. Many stories include mention of drunkenness and fraternising with local girls. (4 sheets).
