Church's large role in small town
Newspaper article with picture looking at the origins of St Marys Church. 1210 is the earliest recorded vicar called ‘William’. Big renovations took place about 1470. Then in 1869 work took place extending the church eastwards adding a new chancel. Soon after re-dedication and completion of the renovated church, pinnacles were added to the tower, new bells installed and on May 15th 1885 the new clock was set going. Detail is provided as to the bishoprics in which the church has stood. Transferred eventually in 1840 to the diocese of Oxford.
