Written long before railway came to Beaconsfield in 1906 description of the ancient buildings of Beaconsfield including detailed description of the rectory; connection with Augustine Burnham Abbey and chronological account of endowment of the manor of Beaconsfield. The rectory was rebuilt in 16th century and occupied until the 19th century by the rector. The rectory is also said to be haunted. Also included is an account of “The Dagger Incident” whereby Edmund Burke threw a dagger on the floor of the House of Commons. The dagger is now owned by E.L. Lawson. In addition, palimpsest brasses at Hedgerley dating from the 14th century and now on display in the church. Speculation regarding the source of the brasses and why they were in Hedgerley church. The Altar Frontal at Hedgerley is also discussed with a suggestion that it was once the cloak of Charles II. Cuttings continue with an discussion of the royal palaces of Buckinghamshire; palaces include Kimble Castle, dating from the time of the Roman invasion belonging to Prince Cunobel, King of the Catyeuchlani, a Celtic tribe at Kimble, near Ellesborough. The Roman emperor Severus formed a camp near Princes Risborough called Long Down: Kings of Mercia had palaces at Winslow, Brill and Cippenham which were used up until the time of Henry III: King Offa held court at Winslow and endowed the manor of Winslow to St Alban’s monastery which he founded. Palace has now disappeared. Notes also on palace at Brill which was a favourite of Edward the Confessor: Chronological series of events from 1160 until 1250 relating to the court, crown works and repairs/building work to the castle which was used by several monarchs.
