This is a free day in Oxford with an opportunity to visit the Ashmolean Museum (free entry) as well as many other places of interest in the city. The Ashmolean was founded in 1683 and its collection ranges from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art. In April there is a special exhibition of Jeff Koon’s works (entry £12.25, concessions £11.25).

9th May 2019 – Biscuits and Bayeux. Reading. Cost: £41.00
Reading contains the ruins of Reading Abbey, founded by Henry I as well as being the headquarters of Huntley & Palmers biscuit empire. A visit to Reading Museum to see the Huntley and Palmer gallery along with a full sized copy of the Bayeux tapestry will be followed by a cruise down the river Thames through Sonning to Henley.

4th June 2019 – Rockingham Castle, Market Harborough. Cost: £25.00
Built by William the Conqueror, the castle played host to many medieval kings. Now the home of the Saunders Watson family and their personal 20th century picture collection, the castle is situated above Welland Valley, surrounded by gardens and affording fine views across five counties.

Built in the 1300s, Eltham Palace was a royal residence for hundreds of years. It was bought by Stephen Courtauld in the 1930s and converted into the only English Art Deco house open to the public.

22nd July 2019 – Knebworth House, Hertfordshire. Cost: £25.00
Knebworth House may look like a Victorian house but within is a house dating back to Tudor times. Famed as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, it also has connections with Sir Edwin Lutyens who married into the family.

The 17th century Ham House sits on the banks of the Thames and is one of the grandest Stuart houses in Englad. It houses an superb collection of paintings, furniture and textiles.

12th September – Ickworth – The Rotunda, Suffolk. Cost: £12.00 (N.T.), £27.00 (non N.T.)
Commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bristol to house his treasures collected on tours around Europe in the 18th Century, The Rotunda showcases exquisite workmanship and paintings. It is complimented by the earliest Italianate garden in England.
