Development in Beaconsfield New Town
The Earl of Beaconsfield is demolished for a Waitrose store. The Earl originally The Railway Hotel was built in 1910. It changed its name due to new owners Ind Coope Benkins. Changes in the New Town are listed. Land opposite between Barings Road and Reynolds Road is cleared and business buildings were built. Grove House becomes Grove Court a collection of shops with parking near the cinema. 1960s the Station master’s house is demolished to be replaced with a Finefare an affordable place to get groceries. Sainsburys creates a single store. The International store no longer delivers but increases its trade. Budgeons opens on the Broadway. John Lewis buys up Calumet opposite the library for a store but was refused permission for a store and the area became residential flats. Later the Earl of Beaconsfield site was allowed to become a Waitrose. The Waitrose building was to provide car parking, community recreational facilities or office space.
