John Hampden Country
The article details John Hampdens refusal to pay 20 shillings for his land in Stoke Mandeville owed to the King known as ships tax. The king needed money as he had not had a parliament and no funding for over 5 years. He demanded taxes from local landowners in the home counties. Buckinghamshire had to pay £4500 towards the building of one ship. John Hampden owed 20shillings. He was tried in 1638 and found he needed to pay the king who was in the right but the local people felt support towards John Hampdens cause and parliament revoked the need to pay 2 years later. This ship money case gained Hampden national importance a document hangs in Great Hampden Church detailing the case. Hampden was very wealthy but it was the principle he stood for. Hampden was Oliver Cromwells cousin. He was adviser to Lord Pym. He held a muster in the churchyard in Beaconsfield for which he escaped punishment in 1640.
