Old Amersham's hospitable past
1 page article with black and white photographs. Amersham owns its rich history due its association with pack horses, stage coaches and beer. Earliest reference to Amersham is 1541. In Charles 1 reign Buckinghamshire had the largest number of carrier services from London – 33 services in total. Amersham expanded to cater for stage coaches and passenger traffic. In 1737, 2 stage coaches passed through Amersham daily – London to Aylesbury. The Griffin for coaching (resting horses over night usually) The Crown for posting (fast changing horses). The Crown belonged to Mrs Drake at this time. In 1771 there was a brewery which employed 50% of the townsmen by Queen Victorias reign.
